Orange, Cranberry & Ginger Kombucha Cocktail

I’m leaving for the airport in a few hours to pick my sister up – she’s coming back from a six-week trip in Central America and Southeast Asia. She is landing this afternoon is this grey, foggy city, and I hope my smile and enthusiasm will be bright enough to make her forget that she left a warm paradise to come back here. I miss her like crazy and can’t wait to see her lovely little face again. Now the celebrations can really begin.

In the hectic days leading up to Christmas, I often look around and can’t help but notice that everyone (myself included) is rushing, planning, buying, preparing and running. Ironically, the most beautiful time of the year is a whirlwind of to-do lists and obligations.

More often than I’d like to admit, I find myself longing for the next moment, hoping things would be different, dreaming of a brighter space, wishing I had more money or was more successful, thinking of how perfect things would be in a few weeks, months or years. These past few days, I was looking forward to Christmas. I was building so much anticipation for that one little day, that I was forgetting to be here and enjoy the present moment. So during this festive season, I’m trying to remind myself that now is the only true moment there is, and the only one that matters. Yesterday or tomorrow don’t exist. In the midst of endless family reunions, parties and celebrations, I’m hoping we can all be reminded for a few seconds that life is taking place right here, right now, under our nose. It’s happening all the time, when we’re driving to the next party, when we’re cooking, when we’re wrapping up presents and when we’re done unwrapping them too. The present moment is all there is, and we should always give it our most focused attention.

Now back to celebrations. I brought you the healthiest, most Christmas-y cocktail for your holiday festivities. Let’s be honest, alcohol is most likely to be on the menu in the next few days, so since we know things are going to get boozy anyways, why not have it in the most healthy, natural form possible? To save us all from those traditional overly sugary alcoholic beverages, I’m bringing kombucha cocktail to the rescue!

KOMBUCHA, YOUR BEST BUD

If you’re not familiar with Kombucha, I’m happy to introduce it to you – it’s one of my favorite drinks and it happens to be really good for us (yay!). Kombucha is an effervescent beverage obtained by fermenting tea with a culture of yeast and bacteria. The result is a naturally fizzy drink that has a delicious slightly sweet and sour taste, which reminds of champagne or sparkling cider. You can make your own kombucha at home or buy it in health food stores – and now in many grocery stores and supermarkets. Like all the other fermented foods (think sauerkraut, kimchi, yogurt, miso, tempeh, kefir), kombucha has powerful healing properties and is praised in the health community for its ability to regulate bowel function, improve immune function and prevent a variety of health issues.

Low levels of good bacteria in the gut can be very detrimental to the body and are linked to a variety of conditions (including diabetes, low immune function, acne and other skin problems). Almost every single body system is linked to the gut – this is why it is crucial to keep it healthy. When we eat fermented food or drink fermented beverages like kombucha, we ingest all the good bacteria they contain, therefore populating our gut with beneficial microorganisms. It’s like taking probiotics, but in the form of a yummy beverage. Win-win! During this period of indulgence and excess, our tummies and digestion are often the first ones to be affected. Kombucha will help relieve constipation, bloating, diarrhea or digestive upsets by boosting our system with friendly bacteria and helping to rebalance the gut flora. Kombucha is even believed to help diminish the effects of alcohol and prevent hangover!

Orange, Cranberry & Ginger Kombucha Cocktail

Servings 2 cocktails

Ingredients

  • 10-12 cranberries
  • 4 tbsp freshly squeezed orange juice about 1 large orange
  • 1 tbsp freshly squeezed lime juice about 1/2 lime
  • 1 tsp runny unpasteurized honey or maple syrup for a vegan option
  • 2 oz gin optional
  • 1 cup ginger kombucha
  • Orange wedges
  • 8-10 cranberries to garnish

Instructions

  1. Crush the cranberries with a mortar and pestle to release the juices.
  2. Add ice cubes to a cocktail shaker to fill halfway. Then add the crushed cranberries, orange juice, lime juice, honey and gin. Shake vigorously for a few seconds.
  3. Fill two glasses with ice cubes. Then strain the liquid equally into the two glasses.
  4. Top with the ginger kombucha.
  5. Garnish each glass with 4-5 cranberries and an orange wedge.

Realize deeply that the present moment is all you will ever have.
